In the winter of 331 BC, a young king named Alexander the Great stood on the shores of the Mediterranean. Legend says he didn’t just choose this spot by chance; he had a dream where the ancient poet Homer spoke to him, pointing towards a small island called Pharos. When Alexander woke up, he drew the blueprints of a city that would bridge the gap between Egypt and the rest of the world: Alexandria.

The First Sky-Scraper in History

To guide sailors into this new capital of knowledge, ancient engineers built the Pharos Lighthouse—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Standing at an incredible height of over 100 meters, it was the tallest man-made structure on Earth for centuries. At its peak sat a massive mirror that reflected sunlight by day and a roaring fire by night, visible to ships more than 50 kilometers away.

The Citadel Over the Ruins

Though grand earthquakes eventually brought the lighthouse down into the sea, its story didn’t end there. In the 15th century, Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay used the very same fallen stones of the ancient wonder to build his majestic fortress—The Citadel of Qaitbay—which stands proudly on the Mediterranean coast today.
