The Golden Fleet: Hatshepsut and the Lost Realm of Punt

She launched a fleet into the unknown and brought back living treasures. Discover the epic maritime journey of Queen Hatshepsut with Doit Travel.”

3,500 years ago, one of ancient Egypt’s most brilliant visionary rulers, Queen Hatshepsut, looked beyond the Nile’s borders. She dreamt of re-establishing contact with a legendary, semi-mythical land known only as Punt—the “Land of the Gods”—a paradise famed for pure gold, fragrant frankincense, wild panther skins, and living myrrh trees.

Sailing Through the Sands

Reaching Punt was no easy task. It required an extraordinary feat of logistics that seems impossible even today. Egyptian shipbuilders constructed giant, ocean-going wooden vessels on the banks of the Nile, took them apart piece by piece, carried them across the harsh Eastern Desert to the Red Sea coast, and reassembled them at ancient ports near modern-day Marsa Alam.

Led by her high official Chancellor Nehsi, a magnificent fleet of five massive ships set sail into the unknown blue waters of the Red Sea. Months later, they dropped anchor at the exotic shores of Punt (believed to be near modern-day Somalia/Eritrea).

Trees of Incense Carved in Stone

The expedition was a historic success. The Egyptians traded fine linen, copper weapons, and jewelry for ivory, ebony, gold, baboons, and most importantly, 31 living myrrh trees with their roots carefully protected in woven baskets.

When the fleet returned to Thebes, Hatshepsut planted these exotic trees in the courtyards of her breathtaking mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. This was the ancient world’s very first recorded attempt to transplant foreign trees across continents. Today, if you stand at the magnificent terraces of Hatshepsut’s temple in Luxor, you can still see the fossilized roots of these very 3,500-year-old myrrh trees preserved in the stone court.
