But then, Sneferu made a bold, unheard-of decision: he commanded them to fill in the steps with smooth casing stones, turning it into the world’s very first true, flat-sided pyramid.

However, the laws of physics had other plans. The outer casing lacked a stable foundation on the desert sand. During construction or shortly after, a massive structural collapse occurred. The outer layers slid down the sides, leaving behind what looks today like a mysterious, ancient tower rising dramatically out of a mountain of rubble.

Failure as the Foundation of Greatness

To any ordinary king, this would have been a devastating failure. But Sneferu didn’t give up. Instead, he took the hard engineering lessons learned at Meidum and immediately began constructing the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid in Dahshur. By adjusting the angles and perfecting the interlocking stone blocks, Sneferu perfected the blue-prints for the true pyramid.

Without Sneferu’s brave structural gamble at Meidum, his son—King Khufu—would have never possessed the knowledge to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. Meidum remains the sacred birthplace of ancient engineering, where human ambition fought against gravity and won.
